The Use of Applied Behaviour Analysis in the Development of Communication in a Child with Hearing Impairment: a Case Report

Applied behaviour analysis (ABA) looks at a child's language expressions in terms of their function. From the perspective of ABA, the ability to request objects, activities and attention is one of the basic functions of communication. Our paper describes the course and results of the intervention aimed at developing verbal behaviour (ABA/VB) in a five-year-old child with long-term auditory deprivation. The individualised treatment plan focused on developing the skill of requesting favourite things and activities using sign language. Regular supervision of the mother and direct intervention with the child led to greater independence, frequency and variability in the child's requests in a natural communicative environment. ABA/VB intervention can be an effective means of developing functional communication in children with hearing impairment.
