Effectiveness of vocal fold augmentation on voice quality of patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis

Mgr. Ema Číčelová, Mgr. Katarína Šálková, PhDr. Žofia Korim, Ph.D., Prof. MUDr. Miroslav Tedla, PhD., MPH

Listy klinické logopedie 2026, 10(1):4-10 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2026.003

Dysphonia is a frequent consequence of unilateral vocal fold paralysis (paresis), characterised by breathy voice quality, vocal fatigue, and short maximum phonation times. Injection laryngoplasty augmentation of the paretic vocal fold is a surgical procedure intended to improve glottal fold closure and alleviate symptoms of dysphonia. This article will present the preoperative and postoperative laryngological examination and voice assessment of patients undergoing vocal fold augmentation. The aim of the study is to evaluate changes in various areas of voice assessment (auditory-perceptual, acoustic, aerodynamic, and subjective) after vocal fold augmentation....

Comprehensive assessment of dysphagia in patients with neurodegenerative diseases

Mgr. Veronika Kučerová, Mgr. Agáta Ptáčková, Mgr. Lucie Nohová, Ph.D.

Listy klinické logopedie 2026, 10(1):11-23 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2026.001

Dysphagia in neurodegenerative diseases represents a heterogeneous group of symptoms linked to specific diagnoses, progression, and patient age. This review summarises selected available diagnostic tools for dysphagia in neurodegenerative diseases. The article emphasises the need for individualisation of assessment due to the progressive nature of neurodegenerative diseases. The progressive nature distinguishes this population from other neurological conditions and limits the transferability of some tools.

Aphasia Therapy Finder - a Practical Guide to Aphasia Therapy

Mgr. Tomáš Benko, prof. PaedDr. Zsolt Cséfalvay, PhD., Mgr. Viktória Čiernik Kevická, PhD.

Listy klinické logopedie 2026, 10(1):24-32 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2026.005

Currently, there is justified scepticism about the effectiveness of speech-language therapy for aphasia, rooted in a historical lack of empirical evidence. In the past, it was commonly believed that after a certain period, typically six months post-lesion, substantial recovery of language and speech abilities was unlikely. However, recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses show that targeted, theory-driven, intensive and long-term therapy yields significant improvements in naming, comprehension, reading, writing and functional communication, including in the chronic stage of aphasia. Key determinants of effectiveness are timing of treatment onset,...

MIA as a tool for supporting cognitive functions: a cognitive trainer's perspective from clinical practice

Bc. Linda Trpišovská

Listy klinické logopedie 2026, 10(1):33-38 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2026.009

This article examines the Method of Instrumental Awareness (MIA) as an integral component of cognitive rehabilitation in a hospital setting. From the perspective of a cognitive trainer, it outlines how the method is incorporated into rehabilitation programmes for patients with diverse cognitive profiles, particularly those with neurological, geriatric, and psychiatric conditions. Emphasis is placed on an individualised approach, patient motivation, and the patient's active engagement in the learning process.

Language Corpora and Aphasia Research

Mgr. Michal Láznička, Ph.D.

Listy klinické logopedie 2026, 10(1):39-48 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2026.010

The existence of language corpora - large collections of texts enriched with different types of metadata - allows for language to be studied as it is actually used by speakers in different situations, providing a good estimate of how common linguistic items are in different contexts. This is related to the ways in which linguistic knowledge is organised and processed. This paper presents an overview of the possibilities of employing corpus linguistic data and tools in the study of language in aphasia, as well as in clinical practice. Corpus linguistics and corpora are discussed here mainly as sources of reference data, which can be used to predict...

Non-Verbal Communication in Newborns

Mgr. et Bc. Karolína Červinková, Mgr. Barbora Červenková, Ph.D.

Listy klinické logopedie 2026, 10(1):49-57 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2026.012

Neonatal non-verbal communication represents a fundamental means of interaction between the infant and the environment. It is an important indicator of neurodevelopmental maturity in both full-term and pre-term infants. This review article presents selected neurodevelopmental and developmental approaches, including synactive theory, developmental care, sensory integration theory, attachment theory and polyvagal theory, which contribute to the understanding of infant communication through behavioural and bodily signals. The article also provides an overview of methods for assessing non-verbal communication in clinical practice, ranging from clinical...

Pilot Action Research Focused on Optimising the FEES Procedure through Support Materials in Clinical SpeecH-Language Pathology Practice

Mgr. Tereza Firešová, PhDr. Veronika Včelíková, Ph.D.

Listy klinické logopedie 2026, 10(1):58-67 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2026.015

Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is a standard instrumental method for diagnosing dysphagia in adult patients. With the growing prevalence of neurological, neurodegenerative and chronic diseases, particularly among older adults, there is an increasing need for diagnostic procedures that are not only clinically valid, but also organisationally efficient and understandable to the patient. The effectiveness of FEES is significantly influenced by the patient's level of awareness, their cooperation, and the organisation of the diagnostic process.
